Jigging in the Azores

We invite you to discover one of the finest destinations for jigging on the island of Faial in the Azores. Come and confront the GrouperYellowtailBonitoBarracudas and Pagres that live in these waters bordered by sunken volcanoes. This volcanic origin explains the irregular seabed, with cliffs, barriers, drops and plateaux. This configuration is an ideal habitat for the local fish, which you'll just have to flush out during this fishing trip in the heart of a jigging paradise, either on your own or in a group. Our priority is jigging, but don't forget your spinning and popping equipment!

Jigging in the Azores

The detailed programme

Here is the detailed programme for this jigging holiday in the Azores:

Day 1:

- Arrival and collection of your luggage at Horta airport (HOR).
- Head for your home, where we'll drop off all your luggage and take out what you need for the first line-ups. The island is very small and can be crossed from one end to the other in 30 minutes. If we arrive early and have time, we can take advantage of this to make a first outing on the plateaux bordering the island.

Day 2:

Your jigging holiday begins!
- Breakfast at 8:00 am in a bakery near the pier offering all kinds of sweet and savoury products. Lunch will be handed over to the skipper so that we can take our picnic on board.

- Departure at 09:00 in the morning until 17:00 / 18:00 in the afternoon. Your skipper will do everything in his power to optimise your day according to the catch, tide and weather conditions.

Day 3:

The island of Faial is considered a grouper paradise. It's incredible how many and how big they are.

If you wish, we can dedicate a day to tracking them. On all our jigging trips around Faial, the results on these fish are spectacular.

We can also concentrate on fishing for bonito, which come in exceptional sizes and weights. These fish will give you huge fights that you'll remember for a long time!

Day 4:

The pejeperro, a species endemic to the Atlantic Ocean and very famous in the Napoleon family, is another of the marvellous species that can be targeted during this jigging holiday.
The island is also lined with species of trevally. The fights are just amazing and the rushes powerful, especially on light equipment. In fact, it's often mistaken for fighting a yellowtail. You have to see it to believe it.

Day 5:

If you are on a 4-day fishing trip, this will be your last day on board our boat. If you are on a 6-day fishing trip, this will be your rest day so that you can fish for 3 more days without getting too tired. Here it will be free time.

There are many giant pagres around the island of Faial, as throughout the Azores. They reach impressive sizes, weighing up to 10 kg.

We can also go in search of the region's bonito, as well as the barracuda, the largest specimens of which are currently found on the island of Faial, weighing in at around 10 kg.

Day 6:

This day will be dedicated to inshore fishing and/or visiting the island. If the group wishes, an extra day of fishing can be arranged.
The island offers great potential for shore fishing. We can catch tassergal, triggerfish, amberjacks and groupers.

Day 7:

As long as our return flight schedule allows, we'll take the opportunity to visit some of the island's marvellous landscapes and make a few final pitches, as you wish.

Further information

SEASON
May to September are the best fishing periods for all the species found on the island. The water temperature rises, bringing large numbers of pelagic fish to the surface. These include amberjack, marlin and dorado.

THE MATERIAL

- Choose light / Medium tackle. Fast action rods weighing up to 250/300 grams for all kinds of jigging techniques on all types of bottom. Slow jigging is also preferable.
- We'll be fishing with Jigs ranging from 120 to 250 gr and inchikus from 150 to 250 gr.
Poppers and stickbaits from 50 to 100 grams. No need to be bigger.
- Recommended 65/80 lb lines for versatility.
- We recommend using 60/100 for inchiku and 70 to 90/100 for jigging. In large pools, we fish with 80/100, or even 1 mm, because of the dirty bottom and the amberjacks or groupers that often break in these places when they ruch.
