Fishing for peacock bass in the Brazilian Amazon

The detailed programme

From the Lodge you can access the entire archipelago (hundreds of islands) of the Rio Negro, where fishing has become very good again since the ban on all professional fishing for Peacock Bass.

But you'll also be fishing the famous tributaries such as the Rio Demini, Araca and Cuiuni. During the week, a 3-day, 2-night bivouac (you'll sleep in hammocks aboard a small "barco hotel") will be organised at the head of the basin of one of these rivers during your stay, giving you total immersion in the great Amazon rainforest, while being supervised by real guides who were born on the spot and know every nook and cranny, every lagoon, and every plant and animal species of the "Mata Amazonica".

Meals are copious and varied, and served at the lodge for breakfast and dinner. They include fish and a variety of meats inspired by local and sometimes international cuisine, and you'll have a well-stocked cool box for your midday snack (sandwiches, fruit and unlimited cold drinks). Accommodation is comfortable, with air-conditioned rooms, private showers and toilets, and internet access (a slow connection, but you can use WhatsApp, for example).

Each day at around 6.30/7.00am, you'll set off to fish in your 5.50m aluminium boats, powered by a 25hp electric motor and accompanied by a competent local guide (one guide for every 2 anglers). You'll return around 10 to 11 hours later. Our guides don't go in for fuel economy and you may have to sail for more than an hour to get to the fishing spots, but you'll still have at least 8 hours of effective fishing left, which is already very intense given the pace of fishing and the local temperatures.

The fish are best fished with lures on the surface or just below the surface (stick baits, propeller fish, poppers, twich baits, jerk baits, bucktails jigs) and also with flies using large streamers.

You can reasonably expect to catch between 10 and 20 "Tucunarés" a day (many more on certain days) and most anglers catch (or touch) at least one trophy weighing between 6 and 8 kg (weighed and measured with IGFA-certified equipment) and sometimes a 9 to 10 kg trophy during their stay.
There are also other species up for grabs: Peacock Bass Butterfly (Borboletta) and Monoculus (Popoca), Arawanas , catfish (Pirarara, Piraïba Cachara , Caparari), ,Traïra, ,Piranhas, Matrinxa.
