Carnivorous and salmonid fishing on Lac du Bourget

Rate this article

Eighteen kilometres long, two and a half kilometres wide and 95 metres deep on average, Lac du Bourget is the largest natural lake in France. Imagine yourself aboard a speedboat... After a few moments' navigation on the Savière canal linking the lake to the Rhône, you'll emerge, as if by magic, in the middle of an immense reedbed. While stalking the abundant pike and perch, you can admire one of the most beautiful lakes in Europe.

The detailed programme

FISH AND SEASONS

Carnivorous fish

Pike, perch  are very present at Lac du Bourget. The carnivore fishing season runs from August to the end of November. During this season, it is common to record around ten bites per trip. The fish are medium-sized (50 to 60 cm). Techniques used: dead fish handled, vertical fishing (gambes, lures), trolling and live fishing.

Best period: July to November.

Salmonids

Arctic char and the lavaret or whitefish occupy the depths of the lake. In the open water or on the bottom, depending on the season, we look for them using a nymph (imitation of a chironoma), fishing vertically in depths of up to 50 metres. This is a very subtle and very effective technique, which also allows us to catch many perch. The average size of char is 30 to 35 cm (up to 2 kilos or more), while lavarets are bigger thanks to their extremely rapid growth (35 to 45 cm on average) and are very combative.

Best period: February, March, August to October.
