Lac du Salagou is a lake in the Languedoc region of France that is home to many species of fish. Today, this 700-hectare lake is a veritable paradise for fishing enthusiasts. In our article, find out more about the species of fish found in the Salagou lake, with its characteristic reddish waters.

The Salagou: a showcase of biodiversity for predator anglers

The Salagou lake is renowned for its incredible diversity of carnivorous fish. Among the most prized species are :

  • The pike. It is THE fish of the Salagou lake par excellence.
  • The pike perch
  • The pole. The latter is present in abundance on Lake Salagou.
  • The catfish. The latter is becoming increasingly important on the lake.

The Salagou pikes are particularly sought after by lure anglers. Indeed, it is not uncommon to catch pike over a metre long. This fish is particularly fond of grassy areas, breaks and berries, which are abundant in the lake.

The poles are also very common in the Salagou lake. They can reach sizes of over 40 cm, and even 50 cm for the largest. They can be found both in shallow areas and along submerged structures.

The pike perchAlthough its population appears to be in slight decline, it remains a highly sought-after species. Vertical fishing is particularly effective. Concentrate on submerged structures, such as trees or old submerged buildings.

Preserving the richness of Lake Salagou

Fishing for all species of fish in Lac du Salagou is subject to strict regulations. The aim is to preserve its unique ecosystem. Here are the main rules to be observed:

  • Ban on combustion engines on the lake
  • Implementation of temporary reserve zones from 1 April to 31 May
  • Mandatory release of carp from 1 June to 31 July
  • Periods of Pike release to be respected

These measures are designed to protect species during the breeding season. They also serve to maintain an ecological balance that remains fragile. As responsible fishermen, we have a duty to respect them scrupulously.

Over and above the regulations, we strongly advise you to adopt good practice at the water's edge. Here are a few tips:

  1. Use barbless hooks. This makes it easier to release the fish without hurting them too much.
  2. Handle your fish with care. Keep them in the water as long as possible.
  3. Avoid trampling the aquatic vegetation. This is essential for the reproduction of fish in the Salagou lake.
  4. Pick up your rubbish and any other rubbish you find on the riverbanks
